The Brig. Gen. Joseph Bailey Camp No. 5 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was formed in Shreveport, La., by 15 male descendants of Union military veterans, in July 2018. The camp charter was approved by the national body at its annual encampment in Massachusetts in August 2018. It is the first such camp in Northwest Louisiana since an African-American camp of the Grand Army of the Republic existed in the city, believed to have been in the late 1880s or 1890s.
The camp is part of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War's Department of Texas and Louisiana.
